Inclusion in a New Zealand High School
Chris McMaster, a doctoral student at the University of Canterbury (UC), spent a year researching in a New Zealand high school and has found inclusion to be more meaningful and sustainable for the national education system.
McMaster spent the year in an anonymous high school studying ways to help a community change its culture by using the Index for Inclusion.
High school is typically the most difficult place to include students deemed to have special needs and this was an important factor in choosing the right school.
This was the first time the Index for Inclusion was used in a high school setting and the first indepth study of its application.
Chris McMaster writes in this article about his research; showing how the school used the Index for Inclusion, the process of change that took place, and the outcomes that eventuated for the school..
